Queen of Suburbia (excerpt), by Gabrielle Everall

My mother said
the queen is an Aries
and so am I
I sell steak knives
door to door
teaching French feminism
on the sly
my knives make
a stainless diadem.

I drop booklets:
steak knives for the cause
on people’s doormats
walk on private property
flirt with the man of the house
finally starting to feel
a part of the community.
