At the Cherry Tree Hotel, by Mick Mezza

for Ken Smeaton

1 History of live poetry of Melbourne

Those gone to the stars today shine on screen.
On screen on chairs they attended
Watch their younger years
Educating or performing their work
3cr in the background supporting the spoken word
Gigs have come and gone wind fans
keep spinning
Ken puts on a film draws a crowd
Crowd claps after poems are read on Tv
Ken dedicated to filming and hard work
2 Under the eye to the sky
Sitting under Utzon's design
Watch as clouds pass by
Wonder of his motivation
Listen to poets, I'm watching the sky
He designed the Sydney Opera House
Did he look through the egg and leave a window
Not sure but this vision arouses me
Half an egg biult into the ceiling which
The management is trying to heritage list
This pub where poets converge and perform
under their eye to the sky
With their poems they sing and tell
Under the blue, white, grey to black
Watch the transition from light to night.
The Cherry Tree Hotel where arts and community meet
To share the joy of a literary feast
